Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride。

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie。 But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea。 Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Love Hoid as the narrator, it lets Sanderson play a little bit with his prose and voice。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 After just finishing rhythm of war this is such a beautiful palate cleanser。 Brandon Sanderson had been one of my favourite authors for a while and now this is quite possibly my favourite book。 I know I will come back and read this again。The world is so cool。 The main character is so likeable。 And Hoid as the narrator is just downright hilarious。 (Lol Dougs crack me up)。 The illustrations are beautiful。 And finally a princess that saves the prince。 Like the paper bag princess for adults。

This book has a voice。 It's a little goofy, a little more of the goofy and dumb dad joke humor that Sanderson uses so often。 Some of that was a bit cringey, but well intended。 Overall, this was a fun fairy tale, a book I would get for my daughter to read。 This book has a voice。 It's a little goofy, a little more of the goofy and dumb dad joke humor that Sanderson uses so often。 Some of that was a bit cringey, but well intended。 Overall, this was a fun fairy tale, a book I would get for my daughter to read。 。。。more

I don't want to read Brandon Sanderson anymore。 His stories boil down to this: a very interesting character, but he dies in the first volume, in the 3rd volume if we are lucky。 Well-described battles, zero human interactions。 An interesting chapter followed by several boring, repetitive, soporific chapters。 Gendered clichés。 I tried to read Mistborn trilogy and The Ways of Kings。 Unable to make it to the third。 I don't want to read Brandon Sanderson anymore。 His stories boil down to this: a very interesting character, but he dies in the first volume, in the 3rd volume if we are lucky。 Well-described battles, zero human interactions。 An interesting chapter followed by several boring, repetitive, soporific chapters。 Gendered clichés。 I tried to read Mistborn trilogy and The Ways of Kings。 Unable to make it to the third。 。。。more

Brandon Sanderson stunned me again with his most recent story Tress of The Emerald Sea。 The story explores overcoming the unknown, fighting for love, and personal change。 The real strength of the story is the protagonist Tress。 Tress starts as a window washer on a remote island; she ends with confidence, new friends, and overcoming tremendous odds。 She does all this with sincerity, wit and the help of a black rat named Huck。 The story takes unexpected turns, a trait of most of Sanderson's books。 Brandon Sanderson stunned me again with his most recent story Tress of The Emerald Sea。 The story explores overcoming the unknown, fighting for love, and personal change。 The real strength of the story is the protagonist Tress。 Tress starts as a window washer on a remote island; she ends with confidence, new friends, and overcoming tremendous odds。 She does all this with sincerity, wit and the help of a black rat named Huck。 The story takes unexpected turns, a trait of most of Sanderson's books。 The romance is sincere and meaningful, which is a challenge considering how easy it is to write cliché romance。 The creativity in world-building is astounding。 On the surface, a sea of pollen seems simple, though maybe strange。 Sanderson gives us a masterclass of taking a simple magic system on a surface level, giving it depth through its impact on the story。 The story explores Tress's discovery of the pollen's various abilities。 This discovery is part of what makes the pollen feel so magical。 Lastly, Hoid tells Tress's story with a very present narrative。 This narrative allows Sanderson to add Hoid's character and humour。 Hoid's perspective is especially effective since he also plays a role in Tress's story, though hindered by a curse that has caused him to lose his sanity。It's safe to say that Sanderson is a top Fantasy author for his well-crafted stories, and Tress of The Emerald Sea only strengthens this argument。 。。。more

Very good! The main characters were not as compelling as, say, Vin from Mistborne, but magic pirates on a dust sea is pretty great regardless。 As usual, the pacing is incredible and it's certainly worth a read! I totally get the comparisons with The Princess Bride。 Tress was a delight to read, funny and heartwarming and just plain brilliant。 Can´t wait for the next secret project book。

Wonderful inside and out。 The art is stunning。 The book design is gorgeous。 The story is fantastically whimsical。

Tress is a wonderful change of pace from Brandon Sanderson, especially in the opening 100 pages。 He brings a sense of whimsy and humour that I've not found in his other books, showing great versatility。 The story itself is strong and definitely has the feel of an adult fairy tale he was aiming for。 Tress is a wonderful change of pace from Brandon Sanderson, especially in the opening 100 pages。 He brings a sense of whimsy and humour that I've not found in his other books, showing great versatility。 The story itself is strong and definitely has the feel of an adult fairy tale he was aiming for。 。。。more

This is quite different from his regular books。 He usually writes large stories that take a lot of time to set the scene and create the world building。 He falls into Tress’s world seamlessly。 Without trying too hard he created the world in front of your eyes within a few pages。 The story leans on the more whimsical than his other novels。 Its a bit more Neil Gaiman esk in my mind。 Its a beautiful story and well worth the read

This was a fun book! It has a more pulpy and young vibe than some of Sanderson's other Cosmere novels, but that was a nice change of pace, and was literally a much faster read。 I found the 3rd person narration very witty, but a little much at times。 Sometimes I wished Tress herself was the POV and the narrator framing device would drop away, but for the most part it was like having a fairytale story book read to you, and gave you a fun alternate perspective。 The ending however felt like it leane This was a fun book! Way better than I was expecting, and I had high expectations。 To write something so good in a completely different tone (in Wit's voice/style instead of his typical Sanderson style) was extremely impressive。 Way better than I was expecting, and I had high expectations。 To write something so good in a completely different tone (in Wit's voice/style instead of his typical Sanderson style) was extremely impressive。 。。。more

I really ended up loving this book。 It took me awhile to get through although the kindle edition doesn't have pages so I don't know how big the book is TBH。 I also struggle reading books set on a ship (I'm looking at your Dawn Treader), but this story was so worth it。I loved the characters more than anything。 Tress, Hoid, Huck, Fort, and Salay were just the best。 And the magic(?) system with the spores was super interesting! I'm looking forward to reading more books about aether and spores。 What I really ended up loving this book。 It took me awhile to get through although the kindle edition doesn't have pages so I don't know how big the book is TBH。 I also struggle reading books set on a ship (I'm looking at your Dawn Treader), but this story was so worth it。I loved the characters more than anything。 Tress, Hoid, Huck, Fort, and Salay were just the best。 And the magic(?) system with the spores was super interesting! 🥰

The thing is, if I had gone into this book expecting it to be a middle-grade one, I'd probably have enjoyed it more。 Instead, I spent the first 50% of the book hoping it would become less。。。 childish? It's not a bad story, and I started to really enjoy it in the second half when all of the things started to come together。 However, I fear that many adult readers might simply be bored by it。And narrating it from the point of view of a whimsical side character was very confusing and unnecessary。 Ha The thing is, if I had gone into this book expecting it to be a middle-grade one, I'd probably have enjoyed it more。 Instead, I spent the first 50% of the book hoping it would become less。。。 childish?

I liked Tress's personality and growth a lot, she reminds me a lot of myself, except she's probably way more of a Hufflepuf than I am 😅 I like the inversion of the princess-saves-the-prince this time。 And that she had a good relationship with her parents。 What I didn't like was the narration。 It felt like third-person POV, but it was actually first-person bc Hoid (who was an irrelevant cabin boy for most of the story) was narrating it。 So it would be completely third person POV and you even hear I liked Tress's personality and growth a lot, she reminds me a lot of myself, except she's probably way more of a Hufflepuf than I am 😅 I like the inversion of the princess-saves-the-prince this time。 And that she had a good relationship with her parents。 What I didn't like was the narration。 It felt like third-person POV, but it was actually first-person bc Hoid (who was an irrelevant cabin boy for most of the story) was narrating it。 So it would be completely third person POV and you even hear Tress's thoughts and feelings when all of a sudden you get jolted into the first person from Hoid's perspective。。。it just was not convincing。 I also didn't like all the technical details and explanations。 My eyes glazed over multiple times as the story went on and on about spores and the physics of spore seas and spore inventions and spore qualities。。。like, yeah, no, I'm not here for imaginary physics lol I'm here for the storyAnd I guess I would've liked more complexity in the cast of characters。。。I felt that they were lacking some depth。 Although I really liked Fort, I thought he was a very complex deaf character and I appreciate the thought put into him that went way, way beyond token representation。 。。。more

4/5A delightful and witty side project from Sanderson。 The storytelling style brought me back to the days of Lemony Snicket。 The twists and turns felt satisfying not trivial。 I will say the middle third dragged a bit, but nonetheless Tress’ voyage did manage to keep the story moving along。

Kaladin Stormblessed is my favorite Sanderson character, but Tress might be my second favorite。 And this might be my favorite Sanderson novel to date。 Thoroughly enjoyed the adventure。

This book was an absolute delight。 It kept me incredibly engaged start to finish。 I loved the cast of characters。 Just sweet, good fun。

Of course, I liked this book - how could I not to if it was written by my all times favorite writer?! But at the same time, despite the admirable abundance of witticisms and thought provoking comments, it still felt more like a light purely entertaining fairy tale to me。 The characters are superb, and the world is unbelievably unique; maybe I was just in a mood for some more serious drama at the moment。。。

Marcel

A much more lighter side to the Sanderson we are used to, of course。 Still I had a great and fun time reading this story。

I loved this book! The strange worldbuilding, the amazing characters and the captivating plot - it had everything I associate with Sanderson novels。I loved how weird and dangerous Lumar's world was。 I got to sail across the deadly spore sea that could be triggered by a mere drop of water; experience the beauty of the giant moons and the alien oceans (I'm so painting those landscapes!), and got to know one of the best heroines Sanderson has ever written - Tress。I liked that we got to experience t I loved this book!
